Vineyards Jean Pierre Chamoux Pouilly sur Loire
Jean Pierre Chamoux' vineyards Pouilly Fumé ~Pouilly sur Loire Pouilly sur Loire The vineyards of Pouilly-sur-Loire have an ancient reputation. The “chasselas” was cultivated there up to the end of the 19th century for the production of table grapes and until the middle of the 20th century to produce a light and pleasant wine which was awarded AOC recognition in 1937. It was replaced by the Pouilly Fume which already had a place at the tables of the kings and emperors of the old regime. Today this elegant and subtle Sauvignon grape is grown on the sloping hills of the Loire Nivernaise and is found at all the great tables of the world where its lightness, vivacity and modernity complement all of the world’s cuisines. At the beginning of the 1970’s I took over the family vineyards where, without shunning the use of modern means of production, I produce my wine with respect to traditional methods. Here the Pouilly Fume comes from my vines that have an average age of 25 years. It is matured in a traditional vat where the use of steel tanks and temperature control as well as other modern oenologic techniques are valuable allies to more traditional methods of winemaking: putting trust in nature – that is, utilising the natural fermentation of the Loire Sauvignon, observing atmospheric pressure and even respecting the lunar cycles. Having at one time concentrated my commercial activities on the international market, the lack of personal contact and my own desire for human interaction led me to re-direct this activity towards the individuals who I meet at the gastronomic and wine fairs which are open to the general public. A good working knowledge of German, and a little English, allows me to make contact with quite a large group of wine amateurs. I like to share my passion for wine and the vineyards of France together with the treasures of our beautiful region. I also appreciate other enthusiasts’ wealth of knowledge and I am always keen to discover other cultures and ways of life. Close to our guest house that I manage with Sylvie, who also helps me in the winemaking tasks and sales, my cave welcomes you in the freshness of summer or the warmth of winter for enjoyable discussions about putting the world to rights over a glass of Pouilly Fume
